"The Real Ones Know"

By Eric Protein Moseley

I keep it real—always have, always will. And from what I’ve seen and experienced, only a small percentage of people succeed in recovery. I won’t bombard you with statistics. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

The hardest part? It’s not just staying clean. It’s the people you gotta face while doing it. They come in three types.

First, there are the ones who are truly happy for you. No shade, no backhanded comments. They see you now and say, “Damn, you did it.” They admire you. Maybe it’s ‘cause they know someone they love who’s still out there and they’re holding on to hope. Or maybe they’ve just seen too many falls and are grateful you didn’t. Those people? Keep ‘em close.

Then, there are the ones who don’t care. They don’t cheer, but they’re not praying for your downfall either. Maybe they’re numb to it. Maybe they’ve seen too many fake comebacks. They’ll nod if you talk about it, but they won’t lose sleep either way. Neutral. And neutral ain’t the worst thing in this world.

But the third kind? Those are the ones you gotta watch. They didn’t want you to make it. Some still don’t. It could be jealousy, could be bitterness. It could be because they’re still using, and your recovery makes them feel something they don’t want to face. They look at you and think, “How’d this weakling make it, and I’m still stuck?” Some used with you. Some sold to you. Some just liked you better broken. And now that you’re rising, they treat you differently—like you switched up.

And maybe you did. Maybe you had to.

So what do you do? You stand by the people who stood by you. You show love to the ones who showed up, even when you didn’t love yourself.

But don’t get it twisted—you’ll still have to be around the negativity sometimes. That’s real life. Growth doesn’t come from hiding. Sometimes it comes from being in the middle of that darkness and still choosing not to go back.

This life ain’t for the weak. But if you’re in it—really in it—know this:

You’re not here to prove anyone wrong. You’re here to prove yourself right.

And if you're still standing, still fighting, still clean—you already are.
